‘Maya’ caption was patronizing

Regarding “A Thoroughly Modern Maya,” [My Best Shot, May 15]: One might think that someone in the Travel section might have found the caption more than a bit condescending.
This is 2005, not 1805. Some travelers and Times staffers might be shocked to know that many countries have more advanced cellular systems in place than the U.S.
Stop with the patronizing writings about other people.
