A setting that shines

Cartier has a long history with Hollywood, beginning in the 1920s when Rudolph Valentino helped popularize the tank watch. In the 1950 film “Sunset Boulevard,” Gloria Swanson’s rock crystal and diamond bangles were by Cartier, which continued to rack up screen credits throughout the years. And on May 9, Cartier celebrated the 25th anniversary of its Rodeo Drive address, unveiling a newly renovated boutique with a party for more than 500, benefiting Project A.L.S., the nonprofit devoted to Lou Gehrig’s disease.
The store has expanded to two floors with blond wood flooring, modern furnishings, oversized glass windows, a marble facade and an 800-pound Murano chandelier front and center. A roof terrace was added for special events.
On street level, Burton Way was closed and converted into a Serengeti-themed lounge (a reference to Cartier’s new Panther collection of handbags), with sisal rugs, faux boulders and leafy trees. Cartier champagne and sushi by Matsuhisa were served to guests, who included Teri Hatcher, Ellen DeGeneres, Portia di Rossi, Sheryl Crow, Debra Messing, Lindsay Lohan, Tori Spelling, Matt Dillon and Andy Garcia.
Then, shortly after 10 p.m., special guest Lauryn Hill appeared, belting out a few ballads to wind down the night.
