Aggravated Assaults, Thefts Rise Sharply

Crime increased in seven major categories in Bakersfield from 2002 to 2004.
Police Chief Bill Rector blamed domestic violence and a growing population. The number of aggravated assaults nearly doubled, according to city statistics. Auto theft and larceny have seen increases of 40% to 60% in the two-year period. Rape and drug-related offenses also rose.
