The Centennial Transpacific Yacht Race, from Los Angeles to Hawaii, started Monday with 33 smaller boats sailing into the mist of San Pedro channel amid schools of dolphins.
The first starters were from Division V -- the Cal 40s and Aloha A and B classes.
Divisions III and IV start Friday, with the biggest and fastest boats in Division I and II setting sail Sunday.
Soap Opera, a Hobie 33 guided by Scott Self and Nigel Brown of Rockwall, Texas, appeared to be sailing best as the fleet navigated four-knot southerly zephyrs off the Palos Verdes Peninsula.
Exact places won’t be officially known until a position report this morning.
