Tyrone Davis, 66, the veteran rhythm-and-blues singer known for his slightly husky baritone voice and warm, romantic singing style, died Wednesday in a suburban Chicago nursing home about five months after having a stroke.
Born in Greenville, Miss., Davis was working days in a steel mill on Chicago’s South Side by the early 1960s and performing nights at West Side clubs. He had recorded a handful of records that met with limited success when he recorded the 1968 hit “Can I Change My Mind.”
He recorded dozens of soul hits through the early 1980s, including “Turn Back the Hands of Time,” “Turning Point,” “Give It Up (Turn It Loose)” and “In the Mood.”
Davis continued to record for independent R&B; labels and was promoting his latest release when he had the stroke.
