HealthSouth Corp. founder Richard Scrushy began his defense at his criminal fraud trial after the presiding judge declined to dismiss most of the charges against him.
U.S. District Judge Karon Bowdre in Birmingham, Ala., let stand charges of conspiracy and securities, wire and mail fraud that were among the 52 criminal counts Scrushy faced.
Lawyers for Scrushy argued that prosecutors failed to prove that their client inflated profit, violated the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, laundered money, obstructed justice or committed securities, wire or mail fraud.
