The jazzmen cometh together
Two legendary jazzmen -- and longtime collaborators -- will each lead their new ensembles at Disney Concert Hall on Friday. Alto saxophonist Ornette Coleman changed the sound of jazz in the late 1950s, stretching its established rhythmic, harmonic and melodic boundaries, challenging listeners and fellow musicians to keep up. Grammy-winning bassist, composer and educator Charlie Haden worked with him in Los Angeles in clubs and on such early classic Coleman albums as 1959’s “Change of the Century” and 1960’s “Free Jazz.” Their creative synergy continued well into the 1980s.
Haden’s ensemble from his new CD, “Land of the Sun,” featuring pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba and saxophonist Joe Lovano, will open for Coleman’s quartet.
Ornette Coleman Quartet, Charlie Haden’s “Land of the Sun,” Walt Disney Concert Hall, 111 S. Grand Ave., L.A. 8 p.m. Friday. $26 to $84. (323) 850-2000.
