Elegance still a cruise essential

Regarding “On Cruises, Forget the Formalities” [Letters, March 7]: There is a considerable amount of casual time aboard cruise ships today, and there is nothing finer than relaxing by the pool and being able to don a pair of shorts and sandals. However, there is a certain credo among seasoned cruisers to uphold that tradition that has set cruising apart from other vacations, and that is to comply with the formalities of captain’s formal night and dress smartly in the dining rooms.
If people choose to cruise, they have selected a style of vacationing that requires more thought to clothes. Those who feel they can’t be comfortable without their shorts and tank tops every day should stick to camping at the river.
But those of us who cruise to be in a social environment with savoir-faire look forward to those elegant nights.
