Fur flies over Martha’s luxe scarf

Geraldine BAUM’S March 15 New York, N.Y. column (“Martha’s Mug Warms the Hearts of Furriers”) was simply revolting. I think the furriers can live with finding a new trade, but what about the cold, dead hearts of the animals whose fur she so joyfully proclaims is becoming chic again? What a barbaric state of mind one must have to revel in the vanity of wearing the skins of our fellow creatures.

There are thousands of animal activists who do not throw paint at anti-fur protests. Instead they have been educating the public to the extreme cruelty inherent in fur products. For designers, furriers and fashion writers to ignore and even ridicule these facts is immoral.

A life is not important anymore. Compassion has no place in the United States. We are no longer a country to be proud of. That is the message you convey when you tout fur.
