Nearly 100,000 people rallied in Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka, chanting slogans against Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s government and decrying its failure to stem rising crime, price hikes and alleged harassment of political opponents.
The protesters from the main opposition party, the Awami League, filled a soccer field and dozens of streets around it.
Media reports have said 3,450 murders took place in the country of 140 million last year, up from 2,500 in 2002. Meanwhile, the cost of living rose by about 11% last year. Zia has vowed to stay in power until her term ends in 2006.
