Berlioz revival
Mark Swed mentions Colin Davis, David Cairns and Hugh Macdonald for taking credit for the Berlioz revival in the late ‘50s (“A Bull Market for Berlioz,” March 16).
He omitted another very influential person who preceded them. In 1950, the eminent cultural historian, scholar and author Jacques Barzun wrote a monumental two-volume biography of Berlioz, “Berlioz and the Romantic Century.” Barzun has always been a champion and booster of Berlioz’s music. He felt that its worth was not fully understood by critics and public alike.
