State Quarter to Honor Astronauts, Explorers

Florida will pay tribute to astronauts and earlier explorers by putting a space shuttle and a Spanish galleon on U.S. quarters marking its entry into statehood.
Gov. Jeb Bush announced results from three weeks of online voting on five designs for the 25-cent pieces, to be issued by the U.S. Mint in 2004 as part of the Fifty State Quarters Program.
The design shows a shuttle and a 16th century Spanish galleon with the inscription “Gateway to Discovery.” It honors the shuttle fleet, which launches from Kennedy Space Center, and Florida’s early exploration by Spanish colonialists.
