A rosy day for KTLA’s parade show

An estimated 1.6 million homes -- or roughly 30% of those in the Los Angeles viewing area -- tuned in for live coverage of the Rose Parade on Wednesday, based on Nielsen Media Research data.
KTLA-TV Channel 5 remained the preeminent site for the New Year’s Day event, with ratings for the station’s live broadcast from 8 to 10 a.m. exceeding combined viewing on competing channels. The station attracted more than 950,000 homes in the area, with the next highest audience -- an estimated 235,000 households -- watching KMEX-TV Channel 34, the Spanish-language Univision station.
Others covering the parade, in descending order of viewership, included KABC, KNBC, KCBS and cable network HGTV. More than two-thirds of all homes watching TV on Wednesday morning were tuned to the parade.
Despite its commanding advantage, which has held firm since the mid-1970s, KTLA’s ratings were down about 7% versus last year. The station is owned by Tribune Co., owner of the Los Angeles Times.
