I paddled out, smashing through a few modest breakers. Then it was calm but surprisingly cold as I pointed the kayak toward Avila Beach. My toes felt frostbitten. Next time I’ll wear booties on an early-morning paddle, I thought. A curious sea lion barked in agreement.
