Hand-Held Cellphones Outlawed for Drivers

British motorists are no longer allowed to use hand-held cellphones while driving, under a law that puts Britain in line with most European countries. In Scotland, at least one person was charged under the law.
Hands-free kits are permitted, but Transport Minister David Jamieson warned that “police can use other powers to prosecute a driver if they are distracted by a call on a hands-free phone.” Police can issue immediate fines of about $50. Court fines can be as high as $1,700.
