1977 Desegregation Suit Against City Is Ended

A federal judge ended a 26-year-old desegregation lawsuit against Kansas City schools, saying the district “is unlikely to discriminate against African American children again.”
U.S. District Judge Dean Whipple’s decision ended court supervision of the district, a year after he halted federal oversight of school busing and the district’s racial balance, facilities and budget.

The achievement gap between black and white students was the last portion of the desegregation plan the court was monitoring.
The lawyer for the schoolchildren named as plaintiffs in the case said he would appeal.
