20th Century Fox is negotiating with exhibitors to open “X2: X-Men United” in up to 7,500 theaters worldwide Friday for the widest-ever global premiere. The studio hopes to place “X2” in 3,700 U.S. theaters and 3,800 venues in 93 foreign markets.
Warner Bros.’ “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” was the previous widest U.S. opening, with 3,682 theaters. Sony Corp.’s “Spider-Man” opened in 3,612 theaters but expanded to 3,876, according to Nielsen EDI.
“Spider-Man” grossed a record $114.8 million in its first three days, more than $24 million higher than previous record holder “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.”
Sony opened “Spider-Man” simultaneously abroad but in fewer markets than Fox seeks.
