Former House Speaker Announces Retirement

S. Vance Wilkins, who resigned as the state’s first Republican speaker of the House last month amid reports of sexual misconduct, said he will end his 25-year legislative career in August.
In a letter to constituents, Wilkins said he has mailed notice of his intent to retire Aug. 15 to the clerk of the House of Delegates.
When he resigned June 13 as speaker, Wilkins admitted paying $100,000 to a 26-year-old woman last fall to silence her claims that he groped her last summer in an office in his hometown of Amherst.
