ABA Debates Bush Proposal for Tribunals

The American Bar Association, meeting in Philadelphia, is debating whether to support President Bush’s plan to try terror suspects by military tribunals, an approach some lawyers see as an assault on the criminal justice system.
The Pentagon is nearly finished writing rules for the first use of military tribunals since World War II. Although the White House has announced no specifics, lawyers assume that the panels will begin hearing cases against suspected Al Qaeda members this year.
The ABA may not take a position, in part out of recognition that its 400,000 members are divided.
