Gunmen in Nigeria opened fire on a car carrying a senior official of President Olusegun Obasanjo’s party, killing him and a police escort, party officials said.
Police were investigating Friday’s killing of Ahman Ahmed Pategi, chairman of the People’s Democratic Party in west-central Kwara state, to determine if it was a political assassination. A wave of political violence has gripped Nigeria in the run-up to elections next year, the first since the end of military rule in 1999.
Pategi, 40, was on his way to the capital, Abuja, from Kwara when his car was ambushed.
