In a bid to escape from a Dubai police station, detainees set a fire that killed 14 inmates, officials said.
The fire overwhelmed the cells in the station basement late Monday, police said.
The prisoners were drug addicts awaiting trial. They had planned the escape because they were suffering withdrawal symptoms, officials said. The victims included seven Emirates nationals, two Iranians, two Afghans and three stateless nomadic Arabs, police said.
