IDs for Port Workers

Re “ID System for Port Workers Considered,” Oct. 25: Who really runs the L.A. Harbor? Is it the union, the mob or the city? Larry Ellison of Oracle Corp. has proposed a smart card using a national standard for authentication and identification by all government agencies. The driver’s license would cross-reference to all databases--state, federal, INS--and be able to verify by fingerprint, DNA, retina scan, face print or whatever who we are. This card would also be a passport and voter ID card.
We need to control our borders, our ports and security checkpoints against infiltration. For visas and visitors these cards could automatically expire. The longshoremen and dockworkers need to join the 21st century and not put their interests ahead of our national security.
