Swimming Ban Lifted at ‘Kiddie Beach’

County health officials have lifted a nearly two-year swimming ban at Channel Islands Harbor Beach in Oxnard.
Weekly monitoring by the Ventura County Environmental Health Division has shown that for the first time since September 1999 the water quality at the site, best known as “Kiddie Beach,” meets minimum state bacteria standards.
Since the release of a study in March blaming a variety of causes--from bird waste to bad circulation--for the high level of bacteria, county officials and others have been working to clean up the site.
That effort included placing a metallic strip along a surge wall to keep birds away and adding trash can lids.
Nearby Hobie Beach is still posted with a “no swimming” sign.
