General Motors Corp. announced Memorial Day holiday cash incentives on a wide range of vehicles, including its highly profitable full-size sport-utility vehicles.
The incentives, which vary by region and run until May 29, include up to $1,000 cash back on the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, and the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL large SUVs in the western United States.
A GM spokeswoman said the incentives are an annual event to coincide with Memorial Day, when dealerships are traditionally flooded with consumers as the spring selling season heats up.
Ron Zarrella, president of GM’s North American automotive operations, said GM was prepared to raise incentives on its large SUVs and pickup trucks to boost market share.
GM’s U.S. market share fell to about 28.3% last year from about 29.2% in 1999. The auto maker was especially hit hard in the small-car segment of the market as Korean auto makers offered lower-priced vehicles.
Shares of Detroit-based GM fell 39 cents to close at $54.61 on the NYSE.
