Scientists Warn Bush on Alaska Drilling

Nearly 500 scientists urged President Bush not to drill for oil in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, a move that they said could permanently harm wildlife and habitat.
In a letter to Bush, the scientists--including ecologists, wildlife and conservation experts--said drilling for oil in the refuge would threaten caribou, polar bears and snow geese that live in the region.
Bush has backed exploring and drilling in the 19.6-million-acre refuge, home to about 200 animal species, to help reduce the country’s dependence on foreign suppliers.
