Power Is Incidental
In his March 4 letter, James Honey states that “Southern California Edison dewaters Mill and Lytle creeks in the San Bernardino Mountains to generate less than three megawatts of power.”
These hydroelectric facilities are an incidental benefit of long-standing water diversion facilities that supply local native water to the residents of the San Bernardino Valley. If these water diversion facilities are shut down, more imported water from Northern California will be needed to replace this local supply. Imported water from Northern California requires large amounts of electrical energy to pump it to Southern California. It is hoped that people like Honey will examine carefully all aspects of their proposals before advocating what may be bad public policy when all factors are considered.
