Train Hits, Kills Man Who Stepped on Tracks

A man was killed Monday afternoon when he stepped into the path of an approaching passenger train just south of the Ventura Amtrak station.
“He stepped out in front of us three to four seconds before we hit him,” said an Amtrak employee on the northbound train.
The victim, whom police described as a man in his 30s, in recent days had attracted the train conductor’s attention when he stood on the tracks facing the locomotive, only to step off seconds before the train passed, said Sgt. John Turner with the Ventura Police Department.
The train, which police said was traveling about 40 mph at the time of the accident, stopped about 500 feet beyond the accident site.
