Activist/actor Ed Asner will talk tonight during opening ceremonies at Mission Viejo High School’s Model United Nations Program conference at the school’s gym.
The conference, which ends Sunday, will include 1,600 student delegates from across the West simulating the activities of the U.N. and related organizations, said the group’s advisor, Laurie Elowe.
“I’m looking forward to the exciting debates on the part of the delegates representing 32 different committees and members from all of the countries,” said, Elowe, a teacher at the high school.
Asner has been asked, as the keynote speaker, to help students with fund-raising efforts for the Heifer Project, which seeks to provide livestock to impoverished families worldwide, Elowe said. Students have raised $3,000 so far.
Elowe has been the group’s advisor since 1985. The conference will be the 18th held at the school.
