* Screening--The Alex Film Society will screen the 1940 classic “The Grapes of Wrath,” starring Henry Fonda, on Saturday at the Alex Theatre in Glendale. Director John Ford’s adaptation of John Steinbeck’s Depression-era novel tells the story of the Joad family’s trek from the Dust Bowl of Oklahoma to California. Fonda’s performance is considered by many to be the best of his long, illustrious career. Although nominated for an Oscar, Fonda lost to his longtime friend James Stewart, who won for his performance in “The Philadelphia Story.” In all, “The Grapes of Wrath” received seven Oscar nominations but won just two of the awards--best director for Ford and best supporting actress for Jane Darwell. Surviving cast members Dorris Bowdon, Darryl Hickman and Shirley Mills will be on hand to talk with film critic Leonard Maltin at the evening screening. Show times: 2 and 8 p.m. The theater is at 216 N. Brand Blvd. $6-$8.50. (800) 233-3123.
