Charitable Outpouring Is Heartening, Too Rare

Re “Flood of Sept. 11 Aid Swamps Charities,” Dec. 8:
Though it is heartening to see Americans come to each other’s aid in such abundance, one must wonder where all this charitable giving was before Sept. 11.
You cannot pick up a newspaper any day of the year without reading about hungry children, homeless families and inadequate health care, not thousands of miles away, but right here in River City--right here in your own backyard.
Yes, even in one of the wealthiest counties in the country. Yet, historically, Orange County has had a pitiful record of voluntary giving to the less fortunate. Why does it take a tragedy the magnitude of Sept. 11 before we open our wallets to our needy neighbors?
