Rooks Sits Out Victory

Sean Rooks did not play in the Clippers’ 89-78 victory Sunday over the Charlotte Hornets at Staples Center. Coach Alvin Gentry said it had nothing to do with Rooks’ unexcused absence from Saturday’s practice. Gentry and Rooks spoke Sunday morning and cleared the air.
Rooks said he called trainer Jasen Powell to explain that he was ill and would not be at Saturday’s practice. Gentry said he didn’t get the message until Saturday afternoon, after practice ended.
Gentry had blasted Rooks to reporters, telling them “I think it’s ridiculous” the veteran backup center had not called to inform him of his illness. Gentry also said Rooks had been late to several practices earlier this season.
Sunday, Gentry said, “Everything is fine. It was a little miscommunication. He had called and I wasn’t informed. I didn’t know about it until the afternoon. If a message was there, I should have gotten it.”
Rooks was disappointed to learn of Gentry’s anger toward him.
“I did what I thought was necessary,” Rooks said. “He got my message late. He can make me out to be a bad guy. I’m not into negativity. I’m all for this team.”
