Nothing Certain but Death and Tax Rebates
- Share via
Eva Taber of Grand Rapids, Mich., has been dead since Dec. 2. So her family was surprised when she received a tax rebate.
Her son, Joe Taber, called the Internal Revenue Service to explain his mother’s assets were distributed to relatives after her death last year.
“The IRS supervisor was a very nice person,” Taber said. “She said cash the check and enjoy the money.”
The IRS acknowledges many checks go to people who may not qualify. There is no provision in the tax law to recover such cash.
The Taber family plans to donate the $113.50 check to charity.
