The Times takes a position-by-position look at the top college prospects and veteran free agents still available:
TOP QUARTERBACK PROSPECTS
Michael Vick, Virginia Tech, 6-0, 216--With a cannon arm, a 4.35 time in the 40, and a 40-inch vertical jump, he has all the raw skills necessary to be a big-time NFL quarterback. Also a student of the game, he shows great leadership ability. The No. 1 pick.
Drew Brees, Purdue, 6-0, 218--Understands sophisticated NFL passing schemes and reads defenses like a pro. A tremendous leader who won’t let a bad play get him down. Only drawback is a lack of arm strength. Late first-round pick.
Chris Weinke, Florida State, 6-4, 238--Older and wiser than other prospects at 28, he has improved his passing and mobility, elevating his draft position greatly. Third-rounder.
Jesse Palmer, Florida, 6-2, 225-- Tosses a tight accurate spiral with a great release. Needs to work on keeping a cool head under pressure. A fifth-rounder at best.
Mike McMahon, Rutgers, 6-2, 213--Possesses the type of arm strength and running ability NFL teams covet. Some question his character and leadership ability.
BEST OF REST
Marques Tuiasosopo, Washington, 6-1, 216--Fierce warrior. Sage Rosenfels, Iowa State, 6-4, 217--Has raw skill. Josh Booty, Louisiana State, 6-3, 225--Erratic. Josh Heupel, Oklahoma, 6-2, 215--A winner. Quincy Carter, Georgia, 6-2, 223--Good scrambler. Tim Hasselbeck, Boston College, 6-1, 206--Matt’s brother.
SLEEPERS
Cleo Lemon, Arkansas State, 6-2, 223--Bad team hurt his stock. David Rivers, Western Carolina, 6-2, 218--Must work on delivery.
VETERAN FREE AGENTS
Trent Dilfer (BALT), Randall Cunningham (DAL), John Friesz (NE).
