Santa Monica Pier will be transformed into a miniature Australia today, thanks to the Down Under Tour, a traveling exhibition divided into six parts, which aims to bring the Olympic experience to 48 cities in 21 U.S. states.
The free Down Under Tour, open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., features:
* Outback Airlines: “A personal tour guide” of Australia with views of its jungles, rain forests, woodlands, mangrove swamps and the underwater world of the Great Barrier Reef.
* The Sydney Opera House: A surround-sound presentation of Sydney’s most recognizable landmark.
* Olympic Gateway: Relives the triumphs of past Olympians, including beach volleyball player Karch Kiraly.
* Ayers Rock: Features a “climb” through visuals and audio highlighting a rock more than 600 million years old. To the indigenous Aborigines, Ayers Rock (or Uluru) is sacred. Today it is a major tourist attraction.
