Mendoza Makes Oregon State Commitment

Alana Mendoza of Camarillo High has made a commitment to play softball for Oregon State.
Mendoza, a second baseman, chose the Beavers over Arizona State and Kansas and might end up facing sister Jessica Mendoza of Stanford in Pacific 10 Conference play.
TRACK AND FIELD
* Freshman Jessica Cosby of UCLA, a four-time City Section champion in the girls’ shotput while at Granada Hills and Cleveland highs, placed ninth Tuesday in the World Junior championships in Santiago, Chile.
Cosby, the No. 3-ranked high school shotputter in the nation this year, had a best of 48-11 3/4.
Kathleen Kluge of Germany placed first at 57-0, followed by Meiju Li of China at 54-4 1/2 and Natallia Kharaneka of Belarus at 53-9 3/4.
BASKETBALL
* Chris Robinson, a 6-foot-1 senior guard who played last season in Fresno, was given a waiver by the City Section Rules Committee to play for Grant this season.
VOLLEYBALL
* Jessica McDonald, a 6-foot-2 middle blocker at Hart High, committed to Boise State.
FYI
* Players for all positions are needed for the Southern California Diamonds’ 12-and-under girls’ travel softball team. Players must have been born in 1988 or ’89.
