TEAM TO BEAT
Five weeks ago Crescenta Valley wasn’t touted as the team to beat, but the Falcons are clearly the favorite after going unbeaten in nonleague play. Crescenta Valley’s run-and-shoot offense will pose big problems for opponents. Hudson Gossard has passed for 1,045 yards and 12 touchdowns. Jason Burkhart and Jason Hogan are main targets who have accounted for eight touchdown catches and more than 700 yards.
CHALLENGERS
Muir and Arcadia, which finished tri-champions with Crescenta Valley last year, have struggled this season. Both are 2-3 and allow more than 30 points a game but are the best threat to keep the Falcons from an undefeated regular season.
THE REST
Pasadena, Hoover and Glendale are still looking for a victory. Pasadena is averaging 17 points a game, but giving up 38. Hoover and Glendale have been shut out twice. Hoover is hoping running back Armond Esmaili recovers from a foot injury that has kept him out of the last two games. Dustin Nersesyan of Glendale is averaging 4.7 yards a carry but hasn’t reached the end zone.
