Whittier La Serna High quarterback Tim Roberto played as big a role with his running as he did with his passing Friday night.
Roberto rushed 12 times for 113 yards and one touchdown and passed for two scores to lead La Serna to a 35-16 victory over Whittier Christian at Whittier College.
Roberto completed three of six passes for 86 yards. All three completions were to junior wide receiver Michael Gomez, who scored touchdowns of 37 and 39 yards.
Roberto also came up big on defense for La Serna (3-2). His 15-yard interception return to the Whittier Christian 20-yard line set up a score, Ryan Davies’ 20-yard touchdown run. Chris Vasquez’s extra point gave La Serna a 21-3 lead with three minutes 53 seconds left in the second quarter.
The touchdown was Davies’ second of the game. He scored earlier on a 30-yard run. Davies finished with 11 carries for 74 yards.
The La Serna defense sacked Whittier Christian quarterback Abe Santos four times. Santos completed one pass in 12 attempts for nine yards, with one interception.
Whittier Christian (2-3) did get good results on the ground. Junior running back Gavin Moy led all rushers with 122 yards in eight carries, including a 72-yard touchdown late in the third quarter.
