Muslim Faith ‘Target’
Paul Conrad’s cartoon linking a breast-feeding Muslim woman wearing a hijab to the international oil crisis (Commentary, Sept. 28) is nothing short of racist. This horrible and inaccurate stereotyping of an entire faith brings to mind Nazi Germany’s stereotypical portrayal of the “greedy Jewish banker.” Today, such a stereotypical portrayal of Jews or Christians would never find its way to the pages of a major newspaper. Sadly, it is the Muslim faith these days that seems to be the “target of choice” in the media, with disparaging images appearing ubiquitously in Hollywood movies, on billboards and on cartoonists’ sketch pads.
