Grand Canyon’s North Rim Reopens

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. — The North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park reopened to visitors Monday, almost two weeks after being shut down by a fire that ultimately charred 13,350 acres.
About 300 vehicles were already waiting when park officials opened the gate at the North Rim entrance on Highway 67.
“There were cars as far as the eye could see. People were in good spirits anticipating the opening of the North Rim and their chance to experience this special place,” said Phil Walker, a park official.
The North Rim was closed down May 10 as a prescribed burn that was supposed to cover 1,500 acres flared out of control, ultimately spreading into the Kaibab National Forest. The fire was fully contained on Sunday.
