Chumash Ceremony to Launch Campaign

West San Fernando Valley candidate Francine Oschin has scheduled an American Indian ceremony Tuesday to kick off her campaign for the 3rd District seat on the Los Angeles City Council.
Oschin said a Chumash tribe spiritual leader will perform a sage ceremony next to the old Los Angeles City Hall.
“Along with burning sage, he will use pieces of the marble floor, which were removed from the old building, to reach the spirits of those who passed through the historic building,” according to a statement from Oschin’s campaign.
Although she is not Native American herself, Oschin became friends with the Chumash during a joint effort to preserve Chatsworth Reservoir, an area important to the tribe.
Oschin is an aide to City Councilman Hal Bernson and one of four declared candidates for the 3rd District seat.
