NORWALK — A paroled car thief is in jail on suspicion that he raped a 14-year-old girl and attacked a jogger Thursday near Firestone Boulevard and Orr And Day Road, police said.
Raymond Rutherford, 27, was picked up at 10:45 a.m. Friday at his home in the 12800 block of Harvest Avenue, said Sheriff’s Deputy Bruce Thomas.
Sheriff’s detectives will present their sexual-assault cases against Rutherford to the district attorney’s office Monday, he said.
Deputies traced Rutherford after a Norwalk public safety officer saw someone on the Firestone Boulevard railroad overpass Thursday who matched the suspect’s description. The man fled.
The teenager was raped on the railroad tracks about noon, authorities said. The rapist’s description matched that of a man who attacked a 27-year-old woman a quarter-mile away at 9:15 a.m. Thursday on a bicycle trail along the San Gabriel River, authorities said. The jogger was able to scream, fight back and escape uninjured.
