Work will begin soon on a plan to widen a block of Birch Street from Brea Boulevard to Orange Avenue.
The City Council voted last week to spend $210,000 in redevelopment money on the two-month project, which would include a concrete bus turnout, a median and an additional turn lane to travel south onto Brea Boulevard.
The intersection now has one exclusive “turn-only” lane going south, and a combination south-turning and westbound lane. With the widened street, motorists traveling west onto the Birch Street Promenade will have their own lane.
John Hogan, assistant city engineer, said the designated turn lanes will ease congestion because the traffic signals will be able to separate Birch Street’s westbound traffic from the southbound traffic.
