Meeting Scheduled on RV Parking Law

Simi Valley resident Kelly Skrimstad said she can’t understand why police let motor homes and trailers park in front of her home for months at a time.

And she’s not alone.

Three of the city’s advisory neighborhood councils recently voted to support restrictions against parking trailers and other vehicles for long periods of time.

A final meeting on the issue will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Simi Valley Police Department, 3901 Alamo St. A City Council vote on the matter is scheduled for April 17.

The law gives police the discretion to ticket or tow vehicles that sit in one place for more than three days.

But Simi Valley police say the law is designed to rid city streets of abandoned cars, not force motor home owners to move them up and down the block twice a week.

Instead, police speak to owners directly about parking their motor homes in locations that are safe.

“It basically boils down to the fact that the police, by not enforcing a 72-hour ordinance, have created . . . a climate that favors this very small minority,” Skrimstad said.
