SOUTHERN SECTION SOFTBALL FINALS

Santa Ana Foothill 1, Santa Ana Mater Dei 0--Erin Mobley scored from third base on a two-out throwing error in the top of the eighth inning, and Elizabeth Bendig (10-1) pitched two shutout innings of relief as third-seeded Foothill won the Division I final at Mayfair Park.

Mobley singled to open the eighth, took second on a bunt and third on a grounder to shortstop. She scored on a ball slapped down the third base line by Amber Dragomir, when third baseman Sheila McCorkle threw the ball into right field.

Foothill (33-2) won its first title since 1992. Mater Dei (31-2) went into the game ranked No. 1 in the state by Cal-Hi Sports, and Foothill was ranked No. 2.

Mater Dei’s Tia Bollinger (30-2, 0.03 earned-run average) lost for the first time in nine career playoff games.
