County Police Chiefs Group Endorses Garcetti

LOS ANGELES — An organization representing all 44 police chiefs in Los Angeles County has voted to endorse Dist. Atty. Gil Garcetti for reelection.
Members of the Los Angeles County Chiefs of Police Assn. agreed that Garcetti has been responsive to the needs of police agencies during his eight years in office, the group’s president, Pasadena Police Chief Bernard Melekian, said after the vote.
The chiefs endorsed Garcetti despite an apparent rift between the district attorney and the organization’s most powerful member, Los Angeles Police Chief Bernard C. Parks. Parks was not at the group’s regular monthly meeting Thursday, when the vote was taken, Melekian said.
He added that the other chiefs absolutely were not trying to side with Garcetti in his dispute with Parks over the speed at which the district attorney is investigating the Rampart police scandal.
Garcetti is being challenged by one of his top deputies, Steve Cooley, and by Barry Groveman, a former prosecutor now in private practice.
