Jet Skids Off Runway During Landing

PALM SPRINGS — An American Airlines MD-80 en route from Los Angeles skidded off a runway in Palm Springs while landing in heavy rain Wednesday, knocking out signs and runway lights.
No one was injured and no passengers were on board the plane during the 7 a.m. accident, which caused minor damage to the plane’s tires, said FAA spokesman Mitch Barker.
The plane was about halfway down the airport’s Runway 13 when the pilot tried to use the thrust reversers to slow the aircraft, causing the plane to skid 60 degrees to the left, Barker said.
The pilot attempted to correct the motion, which sent the plane sliding 60 degrees to the right, off the runway. The plane stopped and the pilot was able to drive the plane to the terminal.
