Tony Azevedo, a senior at Long Beach Wilson regarded as one of the top high school water polo players in history, announced Wednesday that he will attend Stanford.
Azevedo led Wilson to four consecutive Southern Section Division I championships. He is a member of the U.S. national team and probably will be a member of the Olympic team at Sydney, Australia.
Azevedo chose Stanford over Long Beach State, UCLA, USC, Pepperdine and California.
Azevedo’s father, Ricardo, who coached Wilson to titles in 1996, ’97 and ‘98, is the water polo coach at Long Beach State.
Tony Azevedo was selected Southern Section Division I player of the year for the third year in a row.
Other divisional players of the year: Michael Kim of Anaheim Servite in Division II; Lloyd Masson of La Canada (Division III); Jeremy Grubbs of Righetti and Mike Derse of Ventura (IV); and Ben Carlson of Etiwanda (V).
