A man was was hit and killed by a pizza delivery car Thursday as he tried to cross East Coast Highway against a traffic light in Corona del Mar, police said.
The man, who investigators said was a transient believed to be in his 40s and wearing dark clothing, died at the scene about 7 p.m. after trying to cross the busy highway near Poppy Avenue.
“For some unknown reason he stepped off the curb and started walking across Coast Highway against the red light,” said Lt. Mike Jackson, a spokesman for the Newport Beach Police Department.
“The southbound traffic started hitting the brakes, trying to stop, but a driver in the No. 1 lane hit him.”
Jackson said there was no sign the driver was at fault. An investigation was continuing, he said.
The driver, a 31-year-old Costa Mesa man, was “very upset” and meeting with a police chaplain late Thursday, Jackson said.
