Council OKs Funds to Test for Runoff

City Council members voted Tuesday to approve spending $35,000 for additional soil testing for the Bolsa Chica Channel construction project. The city and county will share the cost of the testing.
Several homes in Garden Grove were flooded in 1995 when the Bolsa Chica Channel overflowed during heavy rain. In 1998, the city and Orange County Flood Control District approved a construction project, estimated at a cost of more than $4 million, to improve the capacity of the channel.
But local officials have recently grown concerned about soil and ground water contamination coming from a small shopping center and service station near the project.
The study by Environmental Equalizers Inc. of soil contamination from the shopping center and service station will allow county officials to include more specific requirements when outlining the scope of the project in bid packages for potential contractors.
