Newport Harbor Beats Woodbridge

Newport Harbor, ranked ninth in the county, defeated No. 5 Woodbridge, 15-6, 6-15, 15-10, 15-10, in a Sea View League boys’ volleyball match Tuesday at Newport Harbor.

Newport Harbor (5-2, 2-1) held off the Warriors thanks to 18 kills from junior Blake Tippett and 13 from senior Billy Clayton.

Tippett was strong early with four kills and two blocks as the Sailors took a 12-2 lead in the first game.

After dominating the second game, the Warriors held a 10-9 lead in the third, but the Sailors scored the final six points of the game, including a game-winning kill from Tippett.

The Sailors went on a 6-0 run in the final game and eventually put away Woodbridge on Brian Gaeta’s kill off a Warrior blocker.

The Sailors had 13 service errors.

“We’re still making too many mistakes,” Newport Harbor Coach Dan Glenn said. “If we make that many mistakes against [No. 3] Corona del Mar on Saturday, we’re going to get ambushed.”

In another Sea View League match:

Aliso Niguel 3, Laguna Hills 0--Tim Hefty had 16 kills to help Aliso Niguel to a, 15-7, 15-7, 17-15 victory. The Wolverines improved to 4-3, 1-1).

In the Academy League:

St. Margaret’s 3, Capistrano Valley 0--Abe Marouf was the kill leader with 16 for St. Margaret’s (8-1, 3-0). Marouf also had nine digs and six blocks and teammate Matt McGraw had 27 assists. Tyler Graves had 10 kills for host Capistrano Valley Christian (3-6, 1-2).

In the Serra League:

No. 7 Mater Dei 3, Servite 2--Brian Costanzo had 15 kills for Mater Dei (5-2, 1-0), which rallied for an 8-15, 15-8, 13-15, 15-11, 15-10 victory.
